When Sonic and the freedom fighters of that zone had Robotnik on the edge, and on the verge of defeat, an ingenious Idea came to Robotnik. instead of fighting Sonic regularly, he would first robotocize himself! This created a new and improved Robotnik, he called himself then Robo-Robotnik.
This robotic/artificial lifeform became obsessed with conquering every single zone, by first getting rid of whatever version of Sonic lived in that zone. His diabolical scheme came to an abrupt stop when he utilized the Giant Borg in the prime zone, and was defeated by a multitude of Sonics.
Though
his artificial shell had been obliterated, Robo-Robotnik's cybernetic
consciousness returned back to it's own zone. It was here that it became
trapped inside an orbital space station that he had been working on, but
never finished.
Okay, I know this is getting a little confusing, but try to stay with me here: When the first, and original Robotnik accidentally transported aboard, Robo-Robotnik's consciousness tapped into his memory, and learned where fragments of the Giant Borg were located, in the zone that he was in right now.
After recovering the remains with the body that he had taken over, he utilized his advanced technology to create a new carbon copy of the original Dr. Robotnik. From then on, he proceeded to eliminate the royal family on Mobius. Then, he returned to the Zone where the very first Dr. existed. He made the trip, only to discover that the original died while in mortal combat against Sonic.
Deciding that one zone was just as good as another, Robo-Robotnik picked out the zone where he found the original Robotnik, and started to plot. He set up a network of many satellites, this is where he launched his first attacks. Finally, he revealed himself to Sonic and the freedom fighters as Eggman. He re-conquered Mobotropolis, and enslaved it's citizens once again. Now, he systematically plans to take over the planet in such a manner that is much more evil and ruthless that his former self could never have imagined.
This new version of Robotnik, Eggman, also experiences defeat at the hands of Sonic and the freedom fighters. The difference now? With each new encounter, these battles become extremely more deadly, and the obstacles seem to be that much greater. At this rate, no one for sure can say who the victor will ultimately be.
